Staying fit isn't always fun, and cold, damp weather during winter workouts can dampen your enthusiasm. But there are ways to get around the cold weather by exercising right in your own home. Owning the proper equipment can change a dreaded workout to fun fitness that you look forward to.

For people who like to run or walk to stay fit, the obvious answer is a treadmill. Treadmills come in various sizes and priced for different budgets. But if you don't like the idea of a big treadmill taking up half your bedroom, consider video exercise routines. There are some that stimulate the effects of walking or jogging for up to 45 minutes, with warm-ups and cool-downs before and after. Some even incorporate stretch bands or simple hand-held weights to give you a more complete winter workout.

If you ride a bicycle to stay fit, it can be difficult to get a good winter workout when you consider the cold, the slush on the streets and distracted drivers. But it isn't always sensible to get a stationary bike for your home. An indoor bicycle trainer may be an excellent investment for you in that case. Within seconds, you can convert your regular bicycle into a sturdy stationary bike that feels more comfortable and realistic than a regular stationary bike would. And you can get a good winter workout while you watch TV or listen to music.

Even when it's cold, there will be days when you'll want to get out of the house into the fresh air. In that case, it's important that you dress appropriately for the weather. Don't bundle up! Remember that exercising will raise your temperature and cause perspiration. If you're dressed too warmly, you can actually overheat in the cold. Layering is very important; use an inner layer of clothing that is tight fitting and pulls moisture away from the skin - something like polyester, Thinsulate or wool. The middle layer is for insulation - down, fleece and wool are popular. Finally, use an outer layer that will block wind and permit evaporation of moisture.
